話しかけたいのに、
言葉が届かなかった。I wanted to talk to them,
but my words couldn't reach.
2018年、ひとつの柔道大会から始まりました。It all began at a judo tournament in 2018.

ネパールで柔道の大会を見に行ったとき、会場にろう者の子どもたちが来ていました。私は日本のろう学校で働いていたことがあり、日本手話が使えます。だから、まっすぐ話しかけに行きました。At a judo tournament in Nepal, I noticed a group of Deaf children in the audience. I had worked at a school for the Deaf in Japan and knew Japanese Sign Language — so I walked straight over to say hello.
けれど、届きませんでした。日本手話とネパール手話は、まったく違う言葉だったのです。手は動くのに、何も伝わらない。But nothing got through. Japanese Sign Language and Nepali Sign Language turned out to be completely different languages. My hands were moving, and nothing was arriving.
その悔しさが、すべての始まりでした。They were right in front of me, and I couldn't tell them a single thing.
That frustration is where everything began.
そのまま帰る気には、なれませんでした。会場にいた手話通訳に「ネパールの手話は、どこで学べますか」と聞き、翌日には、その手話学校の教室に座っていました。I couldn't just go home like that. I found an interpreter at the venue and asked, "Where can I learn Nepali Sign Language?" The next day, I was sitting in a classroom at that school.
手話を覚えていくうちに、教室の外の現実も見えてきました。ネパールのろう者の多くが、仕事に就けず、時に虐げられている。その現実を前にして、最初に始めたのが、柔道でした。As I learned to sign, I also began to see what lay outside the classroom: many Deaf people in Nepal cannot find work, and are sometimes mistreated. Faced with that reality, the first thing we started was judo.
柔道は、勝つためのものである前に、自分の身を守るためのものです。守られる側から、自分で自分を守れる側へ。ろう者の寮で暮らす子どもたちに「身を守れるようになるよ。やってみる？」と聞いたら、「やりたい」と返ってきました。Before judo is about winning, it is about protecting yourself — moving from being protected to protecting your own body. I asked the children living at the Deaf hostel, "This will teach you to protect yourself. Want to try?" The answer came back: "I want to."
2019
カトマンズのろう学校の寮の近くに、ネパールで唯一のデフ柔道の道場をつくりました。畳は、国際柔道連盟からたまたま譲ってもらえたものです。その畳を敷いた日から、ヒーローが生まれはじめました。Near the dormitory of a school for the Deaf in Kathmandu, we opened Nepal's only Deaf judo dojo. The tatami came to us by chance, from the International Judo Federation. From the day we laid it down, heroes started to appear.
身を守るために始めた柔道から、やがて、ネパール代表になる選手まで生まれました。その姿を見て、思いました。The judo that began as self-defense went on to produce athletes who now represent Nepal. Watching them, I understood:
この子たちはヒーローになれる。Given a role,
these kids become heroes.
役割が増えれば、ヒーローはもっと増える。だから、パタンの王宮広場にカフェ＆バー「イサラ」を建て、ネパールで唯一の、ネパール手話のオンライン授業も始めました。Given more roles, more heroes. So we built a cafe & bar called ISHARA on Patan Durbar Square, and started Nepal's only online lessons in Nepali Sign Language.
「ウェイター」「バーテンダー」「シェフ」、そして「先生」。畳の外にも、新しい役割が生まれ続けています。話しかけたいのに届かなかった、あの日の言葉。それはいま、役割というかたちになって、ひとりずつ、確かに届きはじめています。"Waiter", "bartender", "chef" — and "teacher". New roles keep being born beyond the tatami. The words that couldn't reach anyone that day are finally arriving — one person at a time, in the shape of a role.
